Dancing in the Park

The National Institute of Flamenco put on a show today in Robinson Park in Albuquerque. Eva Encinias Sandoval, accompanied by a pair of Spanish guitars, did all the singing.

Eva, above far left between the guitars, founded the institute in 1982 and the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts, which offers classes for adults and kids as young as three (called "Baby Flamenco").

Eva has been teaching the art and craft of flamenco since 1976 at the University of New Mexico. She said UNM is the only place in the world where you can get a BA or a masters of fine arts degree with a concentration in flamenco.

Flamenco, of all things, on an unseasonably warm autumn day, in the middle of the usual Saturday morning farmer's market. As Eva sang and as the dancers pounded their heels and snapped the castanets, a vendor nearby sang from his own repertoire, which sounded like an aria about Italian food. A nice aria. The guy can sing.
